Knowledge Sharing Leads to Action at SXSW Eco 2016

Businesses, innovators, artists, policy experts, designers and more collaborated at SXSW Eco 2016 to advance solutions, ideas and initiatives that drive social, economic and environmental change. Attendees participated in tracks focusing on communication, cities, conservation/adaptation, corporate responsibility, energy, policy, water, food systems and more while contributing in workshops, listening to keynote addresses, experimenting in labs and taking advantage of mentoring opportunities. Check out the video recap highlighting Day 3 events.

Green Mountain Energy was in the eco-mix again as the exclusive carbon offset provider of the event, as well as presenting sponsor of the Make America Green Again lounge.

395a0461 395a0483As the carbon offset provider, we ensure that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from attendee travel are balanced out with carbon offsets. Since we started this role in 2011, we have offset 2,284 metric tons of GHG.

Our Make America Green Again campaign was on display in our lounge, along with information about our renewable electricity plans that feature 100 percent wind power. Visitors were able to learn about solar energy for their homes or businesses and get up to speed on what they could do to add more green initiatives to their daily routines. We also chatted it up with like-minded environmental enthusiasts to see what they would suggest to make America green again. Here are a few ideas they shared with us:

  • Create more governmental guidelines.
  • Bike to work.
  • Reduce food waste so our energy and water usage don’t go to waste.
  • Continue to use renewable energy.
  • Efficiently manage our energy and water in the U.S.
  • Make PV installations available to low-income communities.
  • Expand solar in Central Texas.
  • Eat less meat, and only eat organic fruits and veggies.

Going green when it comes to electricity usage in your home or business can have a positive impact on how energy is produced and how it affects our environment.
